Watty Tha Shepherd: Horticulture (Graves Edition)

‍ Watty: ‍

“I remember programming the drums and chopping the sample on separate days. When I finally put them together, I knew I had a banger!

Little did I know that this beat would give me the opportunity to do so much more than just rap!

In this episode, I took. a trip to Reidsville. Twice. The first time was for my Great-Uncle Jerry Graves’ burial service. Uncle Jerry was a cornerstone of our family. If we’re being honest, his role in my father’s life is the reason that I exist in this form today. On this trip, I captured photos and videos of my family members as we all congregated celebrate his life and lean on one another.

On the second trip, I brought my brother Cardiac Visuals and Trae to help me shoot. Cardiac brought his mirrorless Sony camera, and Trae brought a drone.

With their help, I came back to my Uncle’s farm and was able to put a story behind the song. And who better to help me than the one who connected my parents? One of Uncle Jerry’s sons Mark and I had a brief conversation where we discussed our family history, and how things used to be on the very plot of land we stood on.

I’ll forever cherish this video because it means so much. The people in it, the history lesson, the help I had, and the perspective gained. I realized I could be a rapper, producer, director, video editor, and documentarian at the same time.”
